CLS AT WORK

WORK IN PROGRESS…..major projects on the go……
Getting together to improve sustainability:  grassroots unconferences on the Local Action Plan
EarthCare’s Local Action Plan (LAP) is a roadmap to sustainability in Greater Sudbury.  Through ‘unconferences’ on each topic, the grassroots groups working with these issue on the ground will give direction on how to improve and prioritize goals and milestones, and will consider how the non profit sector can act to accomplish some of these important goals.

Working with an intern on two important projects:
Smart Growth educational toolkits for schools, and a ‘roadmap’ of local environmental groups and initiatives
In partnership with reThink Green, a 1 year internship will allow a number of exciting devlopments:  the Environmental Resource Centre will get up and running with outreach to the community; Smart Growth educational toolkits will be prepared for elementary and high school students, and a roadmap will map out the environmental groups and initiatives in Sudbury, and the connections among them.
Continuing to build a ‘community photo album’ of local images
By inviting submissions, and our recent photo contest, we have built up a wide range of local images exploring the nature of our community:  what we love, where we want change, areas of concern, green events and initiatives, implications for sustainability, community revitalization, and more.

FULFILLING THE MANDATE OF OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Working with the City towards Smart Growth
We provide bi-monthly bulletins to Councillors, updating them on our activities and issues of concern, and continue to provide submissions where there is opportunity for public input. At the same time, we provide them with information sheets on issues such as water, transportation, etc.
Researching and sharing information on Smart Growth
The CLS continues to research best practices for supporting Smart Growth at the municipal level.   Smart Growth ideas are being shared through networking, making submissions to the City, and writing into local media. Earth Day is an upcoming event that will also reach many people. Find our resources on-line or at the reThink Green Environmental Resource Centre.
Acting as a Network of like-minded community groups and citizens
Our network now includes over 300 individuals and twenty-eight community groups. Information is shared through a regular e-newsletter.  We continue to look for more ways to foster partnerships, share information and resources effectively, and make use of our network to strengthen the voice for a sustainable Sudbury.
Our focuses this year are sustainable transportation, lake water quality, air quality, and Smart Growth.
